arbara Nazareth Marrone lives on Margarita Island in Venezuela. She is a fun loving and curious 6 year-old girl who was born with Tetralogy of Fallot. This is a very complex heart condition in which there is a hole between the main chambers of the heart and an obstruction of blood flow coming from the heart. This leads to significantly less oxygen in the blood and less oxygen delivered to her body. Because of this condition, she will not survive long-term. The average age of death in a patient with Tetrology of Fallot without surgery is 6 years old. With life-saving heart surgery, the rate of survival is over 85% at 35 years after surgery and most patients live well into adulthood.
Barbara’s parents, who have two younger children, simply can’t afford the surgery that is required. Her father works hard for their family unloading merchandise off of trucks for a living but cannot come close to raising the needed money for surgery. This family of five all live in one bedroom.
While the surgery and recovery in the United States would be cost prohibitive, we have located a hospital in Caracas, Venezuela that has a lot of experience treating Tetrology of Fallot. They can do the surgery and rehabilitation for $12,000. That would also allow Barbara to stay with her parents and in familiar surroundings during this challenging time of surgery and recovery.
Healing the Children has a mission to help children in all parts of the world. While it is wonderful that Barbara can get the surgery in Venezuela – it is still very costly and impossible for her family to pay for. Please consider donating at any amount to help Barbara receive the life saving surgery she desperately needs.
All donations are tax deductible and will be sent directly to Clinica Caracas in Venezuela to cover the costs of surgery and rehabilitation. We will also send out photos of Barbara after her recovery to all donors and will post a follow up story about her here on our website.
